Homework?. What homework?

leave a comment

davidHey there readers. I haven’t blogged in over a week and I feel I have deprived you all of such an interesting, and thought provoking read. One of which you would chat to your friends about, or maybe your siblings over a cup of tea. Ah no, only joking just thought i’d let you have another insight into a 5th years very deprived social mind. It really is socially deprived. That is one thing about the Leaving Cert. I really really hate. If you get going out one weekend a month that’s it.. tops. Basically I can’t afford to go out much more both financially and educationally wise.. So lately I have been experiencing some mild Psychosis due to my unsociable study plan.. #

Anyway you may be wondering what the title refers to. So I was having a chat with a couple of the other struggling 5th years (we are struggling we need to go out more) about the amount of homework they get. I was shocked and very surprised to hear that the majority of people are getting around 2.5-3 hours homework on an average weekday. I think this is ridiculous, and so crazy. I get maximum 1 hour a night but it is ussually 40 minutes. I make up the other 2 hours and 50 minutes studying though. But still 3 hours homework?. It’s ridiculous.

Music is so nice to have as a subject. I know it is an exam subject and everything but the general mood in the music class is so friendly, relaxed and gentle. We get our work done don’t doubt, but our teacher is always up for a laugh and doesn’t take the class too seriously.

I’m loving Geography at the moment too. We’re moving pretty fast in comparsion to the other class in my school (there’s 2). So far we have covered.
(1) Earth’s Structrure
(2) The Plate Tectonic Cycle
(3) Volcanoes
(4) Earthquakes.
(5) Geoecology
We start 5th year with the last topic on the paper the Option Question. It apparently is the hardest question on the paper so the teacher always starts with this to show everyone that Higher Level is not a joke. I’m finding it pretty handy so far, we have about half of it covered so it’s pretty good. We’ve done
(1) Composition
(2) Characteristicts
(3) Processes
(4) Classification
(5) Development
So we have 2 topics yet to cover i think so it’s going along quite well!!

That’s all I have for this week, will report next week with more.

The Leaving Cert Lifestyle

one comment

davidI believe somewhere, subconsciously I have become immune to this whole Leaving Certificate Business. Some days I arrive home, bag ripping at the seams full of two ton Business and Geography books, and feel so exhausted. People say school is “supposedly” the best time of your life, does it feel like that?, not likely. A normal schedule goes like this for me. Up at 7, school from 9.10-3.50, come home and start studying again at 5 usually until 8.50. Sometimes I feel ready to give up, (CUE POIGNANT MUSIC)

Some teachers have been trying to stuff so many facts into our heads, our Geography teacher has actually lowered her standards and now is attempting to teach us the importance of divergent plate boundaries by dancing… yes .. dancing.

On the plus side, I’m liking all my subjects at the minute. I love Business especially, I have a fantastic teacher so full of enthusiasm and helpfulness. We just had an exam on the first 2 chapters yesterday so I’ll be interested to see how that goes!.

On the other side of 5th year is all the homework.. Some subjects the homework load is very manageable, however English is really starting to build up. On an average weekday I have about 4-6 copy pages of English homework to do, usually about Sylvia Plath’s Poetry. Maybe it doesn’t seem like a lot but when you have 7 other subjects and an LCVP Project to complete it really does build up. This weekend we were given 4 Poetry Question on “Morning Song” by Sylvia Plath, and a comprehension from the 2008 Leaving Paper. Total so far is 9.5 pages and counting.. RIDICULOUS.

I think I have finally discovered a PERFECT study schedule. I get up at 6 AM, study from 6.30-8.00, go to school from 9-4 come home study from 5-9! Seems like a lot but it’s working!. French was my worst subject in Junior Cert and somehow managed a Higher B. On my last two tests I got 92 and 97 respectively!! Who would have guessed I would be getting A1’s in French!

I am currently doing Accounting as an outside subject with a couple of people from my class and it is certainly challenging. It really is a hard difficult subject that takes up sooo much time.. So far we’ve done the Debtor& Creditors Control Accounts, Depreciation of Fixed Assets, and Incomplete Records..

I think that’s all I have to report for today.. Feel free to comment i’d love to hear from ye guys!!

Higher Options, UCD, and a dose of Sylvia Plath what an exciting week!

leave a comment

davidSo as you can see from my title I’ve had quite a busy week this week. As well as having the whole Leaving cert. preparations to worry about (kinda) I also traveled to Dublin with a lot of my class to the Higher Options conference up in Dublin, and ones thing for sure it really opened by eyes to all the possibilities I can avail up, but also the opportunities I possibly will never have…

Points are so hard to get and so high in the majority of courses. Psychology is something that was always of interest to me, however Trinity College Dublin offer Psychology and Music degree at a massive 560!!. Like seriously a very few people can even consider reaching that let alone getting the points they need to secure there place!.

(BIG SIGH)

So I was having a look around the various stands and a couple really caught my eye. I loved the NUIM & UCD stands especially I don’t know what it is about them I just love the atmosphere I got at the individual stands. Arts is the main college course I’ve been looking at. I would love to teach English, it really is my passion I love the thrill of reading books and writing stories, it just fills me with such joy. Then I would probably minor in either Geography or Music which i LOVE evenly. Average points would be between 350-400 points so it’s very manageable!!.

We’ve also been doing a lot of Poetry in English, Sylvia Plath in particular. I really enjoy her poetry it really revolves around major problems anyone that gone through a depressive patch. Her poetry is just so simple with the simple images and similes, however the effect the messages and rhetorical questions have on me is beyond anything I can comprehend!.

So my last bit of this post revolves around Religion. Is anyone doing it in school?. If you are can you please please comment this blog with any books, revision books etc that could help me. I am considering it outside school as I really enjoy varying cultures and general Theology. So any help is appreciated!!.

That’s all from me for this week I will report back this day next week with more.

“The future depends on what we do in the present”

david“The future depends on what we do in the present”
-  Mahatma Gandhi.
Now that I have caught your valauble attention, I believe introductions are in order.
My name is David and I extend a warm failte to my blogosphere on this wide cyberspace.  I am currently a 5th year student in school.
To some the whole experience can be summed up completely in 3 words..
“Utter, tiring, hell”..
However it’s not something we get the choice about, (hence my inspirational quote :L).  So as i explained earlier in my blog I am now a 5th year student. The idea of study, continous assessment and mountainous piles of homework hit me like a train after the TY experience. (”Oh, another unfortunate soul” I hear you cry.) Yes, it was a change, and a drastic one at that, but i’m over the inital ice-cold, shock of the first week in school and am now ready to get some work done.
I am doing 8 subjects and LCVP for my Leaving Cert. They are
  • Gaeilge(HL)
  • English(HL)
  • Maths(OL)
  • French(HL)
  • Business(HL)
  • Music(HL)
  • Geography(HL)
  • Accounting(HL).
And no I am not doing a Science subject. A wise choice?. I am yet to find out, however if the marking scheme in the Sciences next year was as frightening awful, I believe I did.
So I basically decided to set up my blogging account to get a few messages across to student in my predicament, and also to find out more about the study techniques all of you guys use daily.
The quote I chose at the start of my blog really does describe the whole experience to me. It’s a learning experience, another path of self discovery if you will. And hopefully at the end of all the tiring nights where you would rather pull your hair out than face another Trigonometry question, or Hamlet quote, we will have learnt more about ourselves, what we would like to achieve regardless if this means attending college or not.
I think that’s all I have time for this week, I will write back with more information and hopefully understandable messages!
So until next time
A tout a l’heure.
