General vision and viewpoint is the outlook of the text: you are comparing whether your texts have an optimistic/pessimistic outlook. You should look at four elements of your texts, two of which are shown below:
Subject matter that reveals a bright or dark outlook
Lamb: The text features Michael’s leaving of The Home, a shelter for children with no families, where he has lived for years. This reveals a dark outlook as his departure is not accepted by many, and meets many challenges. In addition, when Michael leaves the Home he is haunted by his past, as he views his time in the brothers as a negative period in his life. This combination of his inability to escape the negativity of his past life, but also the difficulty of starting a new life outside the Home due to the disapproval of others, leaves Michael struggling and in turmoil.Truman Show: The subject matter reveals a dark outlook, focusing on the lack of control Truman has in his life. We see that from a child Truman was the star of a worldwide television show, in which millions of people watched his daily routines on television. He is never told this, and even as an adult Truman is still the centre of this worldwide show. Truman has no control of his life therefore, as everything that happens to him is scripted – the woman he marries was directed to meet him and fall in love with him, while his best friend did not come about by fate, but rather the intentions of the show’s director, Christof. Everything that Truman does is controlled and created initially by Christof, designed to create the best possible television for his viewers.
Sive: The subject matter reveals a dark outlook. The text tells the story of Sive, a young eighteen year old girl who was born out of wedlock. A local matchmaker Thomasheen arranges for Sive to marry Sean Dota, an unattractive man many years older than her. Despite this being against Sive’s wishes she has no say in who she will marry, as others around her make this decision for her. Her choice for marriage, Liam, is not accepted by her uncle Mike and his wife Mena as he is related to the man who abandoned Sive’s mother upon realising she was pregnant with Sive. Thomasheen will not allow Sive any personal freedom either as he too constantly pushes the marriage of Sive and Sean Dota. To ensure he gets what he wishes he convinces Sive’s family to agree to this marriage and prevent Sive from marrying Liam with the sum of two hundred pounds, entrapping Sive in the process.
Characters that share a particular vision of life.
Lamb: Characters here challenge their obstacles, revealing a bright outlook also. Michael shows this throughout the text, despite the various challenges to his desire to leave the Home. Brother Benedict threatens to make it difficult for Michael to get a job if he leaves, but this does not prevent Michael from planning to leave. Even later, when there is widespread coverage of his leaving the home with Owen, with newspapers claiming he kidnapped Owen, he does not allow this to force him back to the Home. Rather, he decides to return to Ireland, realising that he cannot continue to wander about London and escape detection, to the place where no one will expect him to be, in an effort to continue his new life away from the Home.Truman Show: Christof’s control of the world does not mean that characters do not challenge their obstacles. It is suggested that Sylvie is written out of the show (or, as Truman was told, moved to Fiji), because she was prepared to go against the code of secrect Christof wished to maintain and tell Truman the truth, that his world was actually a television programme. Elsewhere, Truman is willing to challenge any obstacle in the film, even though he is not completley sure why he is doing so. Even when other characters attempt to stop him leaving the town in which he lives, he seeks other ways to do so, such as the bridge, a trip to Fiji etc.
Sive: Characters do not face their obstacles here. Sive cannot overcome her entrapment as she is overpowered and dominated by her family, Thomasheen and Sean Dota. Sive’s father abandons Sive’s mother upon hearing of her pregnancy, as he cannot handle the situation. Liam is unable to act out against those controlling Sive, in an effort to win his love. Indeed, his only retribution against these individuals is a feeble retort at the text’s end as he tells Mena and her husband that they are responsible for Sive’s death as he carries her dead body into the house.
I have notes for the comparative on my website, http://www.ryjolc.weebly.com and you can email me at ryjolc@gmail.com if you need further notes, such as for the two other elements of the text you should be looking at/help.
