Living in sin is a poem which shows the contrasting states of a relationship for a man and a woman. Rich shows with such contrasting states how for a man a relationship involves no effort, represented with as the man in the poem 'sounded a dozen notes upon the keyboard,/ declared it out of tune, shrugged at the mirror,/ rubbed at his beard, went out for cigarettes' whereas in a relationship a woman will carry out all the necessary endeavour, represented by the woman in the poem who ' jeered by the minor demons,/ pulled back the sheets and made the bed and found/ a towel to dust the table-top,/ and let the coffee-pot boil over on the stove.'
